Collaborative Art
Occasionally two artists collaborate and through their passion and creativity connect as one. Their different styles and color palettes work together, brush on top of brush, not knowing what the other is doing. The end result is a surprise and forms a unique style producing a special painting. The following paintings are done by Gary and his friend Deborah Elaine.
Gary and Deb have painted over fifty paintings together and over twenty wall murals over the passed six years. These paintings gave both artists a way to produce work that was unconventional to each, and allowed them to satisfy the desire to do something different than their normal style of work. A special place found by chance laying on a big beautiful beach and noticing people disappearing in the lava rocks and not returning. You might follow them to a secluded spot with a sign along the way that says, “no clothes passed this point.”

A wonderful spot found by following the birds on a cliff in Hawaii. Chirping away, they moved to the corner as we followed them. As we went around the corner, the birds seemed happy and went back, leaving us at this natural bath where the waves gently washed in and out. A perfect picnic spot to watch the sunset.

Their first watercolor came about when Gary had just finished a number of commissions and said, “I just want to paint something I don’t have to.” Deb’s pouring style is to do an abstract and then find something real that integrates into it. Deb gave Gary one of the pourings and went off to teach. A half hour later, Deb said, “They were supposed to be green grapes!” Gary’s reply was, “Well, they are not green anymore!” The grapes were transitioned from red to green to complete the painting.

Generally, Deb and Gary painted together at the same time, but this painting was different. Deb had the pouring and glasses done and dropped it off to Gary to finish the grapes. Expecting it to look like the previous one, Deb has a surprise the next day! Gary just said, “It got all mixed up, like us.”

Hiking in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, you can always find tranquil beauty. This depiction of the morning sunshine was from the lower trail to White Oak Canyon Waterfall.

This painting came to light when Deb brought an old watercolor to Gary and asked if there was anything that he could do to, ‘fix it’. After a little thought, Gary said, “I think it is a lost cause, but maybe we can put pastels over it.” That became the afternoon’s work!

This set of paintings were performed using the Jackson Pollack technique and asking Gary’s White Lab Schmuppy to walk across it. The look on his face was amazing as the said, “Really! For over twelve years I’ve been told to stay off your paintings!” He opened his front paws and slid across the painting wagging his tail the entire way, as to say, “Look what I did!”

This was the signature piece at Gary and Deb’s show at Backdoor Art Gallery in Fredricksburg, VA. Twelve paintings each of their collaborative paintings and individual works were shown to show how the two styles became one. Thus the title, “Ours, Yours & Mine.”
